Since the 1960s, WA has relied on prescribed burning in Southwest forests with the aim of reducing the risk of bushfires; however, prescribed burns are causing significant damage to forest and woodland ecosystems and face mounting social resistance.

Instead, fire management can and must evolve to a program focused on rapid detection and suppression strategies alongside First Nations-led cultural burning and only targeted, low-intensity burns.
